Five Cows All Spotted White
(tune: 5 Littel Speckled Frogs)

Five cows all spotted white
Chewed on cud day and night
So they could give milk sweet and pure
Squirt, Squirt
One left the barn one day
So she could find more hay
Now there are 4 spotted cows
Moo! Moo!

Five Cows poem

Chickens
(tune: twinkle, twinkle little star)

Chickens, kittens, piglets too
Horses, donkeys, cows that moo
Fish that swim down in the pond
Ducklings quacking all day long
Lots of things for you to see
When you see the farm with me.

Chicken poem

Old MacDonald's Vowel Farm

(tune: Old MacDonald's Farm)

Old MacDonald had a farm, A, E, I, O, U.
And on that farm he had a pig, A, E, I, O, U.
With an /i/, /i/ here, and an /i/, /i/ there,
Here an /i/, there an /i/, everywhere an /i/, /i/.
Old MacDonald had a farm, A, E, I, O, U.

Take Me Out to the Barnyard
(Tune: Take Me Out to the Ballgame)

Take me out to the barnyard.
Take me out there right now.
Show me the cows, pigs and horses, too.
I hear an oink and a neigh and a moo.
There are chickens laying their eggs.
If they don't lay it's a shame.
Oh, it's one, two, three eggs today,
And I'm glad I came.

Farm Sounds
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)

The cows in the barn go moo, moo, moo,
Moo, moo, moo, moo, moo, moo.
The cows in the barn go moo, moo, moo,
All around the farm.

Other verses:

... pigs in the pen go oink, oink, oink

... hens in the coop go cluck, cluck, cluck

... rooster on the fence goes cock-a-doodle-do

... ducks in the pond go quack, quack, quack

... lambs on the hill go baa, baa, baa

Tractors, Tractors
(Tune: Daisy, Daisy)

Tractors, tractors,
Tractors help farmers work.
They pull plows that,
Break up the clumps of dirt.
A farmer can work much faster,
Because he has a tractor.
There's lots to do,
The whole year through.
Tractors help farmers do the work.

Literature

Literacy Ideas

Sight word powerpoint: I created this powerpoint to review our sight words each day. We read through the words as quickly as possible.

These farm spelling cards are designed to be used with the white letter tiles available at Walmart in the education section. Children build words placing the tiles on the cards.
Thanks to Jo at www.makinglearningfun.com for making these cards. Visit her site for more fun activities.

* Write words on pig die cuts. Laminate. Children use the pigs in a pocket chart to create silly (or not silly) sentences. I made the nouns on one color and the other words on a different color.

* Purchase name plates with a farm theme. Laminate then and then write spelling or vocabulary words on them with a sharpie. Leave enough room after the word for kids to rewrite the word using a vis-a-vis pen. Children can trace the words and then write them next to the word. This not only gives children spelling practice, but also allows them to practice their penmanship. When they finish they wipe the cards clean with a wet wipe to be reused by another student.

Math Ideas

* Eggciting addition: write math facts on one side of plastic easter eggs and answers on the other side. Put all the eggs in a basket. Kids must match up the egg parts.

* Many of the die cuts available at teacher supply stores have a different color on the backside. I put cow cut outs that were black on one side and brown on the other side in a pocket chart. Children used them to create patterns in the pocket chart. You could also include two or three different animals allowing for greater variety in patterning.

Science and Social Studies Connections

* Compare cities and farms. Use a Venn diagram. After completing the Venn diagram divide the class into two groups. Have one group create a country mural and one group create a city mural.

* Make butter: give each child a clean small container. Fill it half way with cream. Add a clean marble and seal the container tightly. Have the children shake the container about 10 minutes. You might want to have children share so that they can take turns shaking. Little arms get tired.

The Butter Boogie
Shake it up
Shake it down
Shake it all around.
Shake it high
Shake it low
Shake it to and fro.
Shake it over
Shake it under
Pretty soon, you've got butter!

* Visit a real farm or apple orchard.

Just for Fun

Fill a rubber/latex glove with water and tie closed. Poke s small hole in each finger. Tape it under a table or chair. Children can try their hand at "milking."

Decorating and Bulletin Board Ideas

* First Graders Are Clucky About Writing: we made large chickens out of brown construction paper and decorated them with colored sticky tape. Each child wrote a story about a chicken and we attached it to the chickens feet. We hung these on the bullentin board under the caption "First Graders are Clucky About Writing"

* First Graders are Mooo velous: decoarate with cows, spots and children's photos. Or "Moovelous Work" and post children's marvelous work.
