Little Red Riding Hood

Little Red Riding Hood basket in hand.
The Wolf's in the woods,

Fairy tales lend themselves well to comparing and contrasting. There are many versions of the Cinderella story that can be compared and contrasted using Venn diagrams.

Have children write their own version of a fairy tale.

Write out a summary of a fairy tale on sentence strips and have the children order the story.

Make up sets of cards that contain fairy tale characters names on them. Create another set with settings, another with props (such as basket, glass slipper, etc). Turn the cards face down. Have children select several character cards, 1 setting card and a couple of prop cards. Then have them create a new fairy tale using the cards they picked.

Provide children with an assortment of geometric paper shapes. Ask them to use the shapes to create a fairy tale scene. An example could be a castle created using rectangles, triangles and squares.

Read the story of Rapunzel. After the story provide children (in groups) with a long braid of yarn. Have them measure the "hair" using several non standard units of measure and then measure using several standard units of measure. Discuss the importance of standard units.

Cut crowns from yellow fun foam. Write a number sentence on each crown. Provide a container of fake jewels. Have children add fake jewels to each crown to indicate the answer to the number sentence.
