Mini lessons to help launch the Fabulous Four

Lesson

Lesson: Introducing the writer's workshop

Lesson
2-2

Lesson: Reader's workshop needs order

==> Read a story where chaos rules (The Day Jimmy's Boa ate the Wash)

==> Discuss chaos.

==> Ask the children why chaos is a bad thing.

==> Should reader's workshop be a place of chaos or order?

==> Why do you think order is important in reader's workshop?

==> Today I want you to think about what reader's workshop should look like and what it should sound like.

==> Make a chart of the children's suggestions. (Quiet, no walking around, no interrupting, busy brains, everybody reading, working, etc)

==> Tell the children that we are going to try it for a few minutes and see how it goes. Have the kids go to their tables and read quietly for a few minutes.

Lesson

Lesson: Shelving books

==> Put out a stack of books on the floor.

==> Remind the students of the previous lesson on caring for books.

==> Review the care chart

==> Point out the books on the floor and suggest that we need to put them away.

==> Wonder aloud how you might know where to put them.

==> Many kids will have noticed that the books are numbered.

==> Look at the different numbers. Take the first book in the pile, look at the numbers and see if the kids can point out where you should put it.

==> Tell the kids that there are a lot of books in this pile. That's a lot of work to put all those books way. Suggest that you will just put them all in the bucket closest to you. See what they say.

==> Ask the kids why they think the buckets are numbered. (Makes it easier to find a book you want, helps keep the books organized)

==> Have children help you return the books to the appropriate bins.

==> Remind children that even if it seems easier at the time, in the long run it wastes more time if books aren't where they are supposed to be.
