Literacy Activities

Build a pizza: Give each child a paper pizza. Cut out a variety of pizza toppings from construction paper. Write sight words on one side of the toppings and laminate. To play place all toppings face down. Players select a topping piece and turn it over and read the word. Words that are read correctly can be added to the pizza.

Math Activities

Pizzas are a natural for introducing fractions - fourths, sixths, eighths. Add a certain number of pepperoni pieces per slice and you have a simple addition lesson. Children can select two or more pieces and figure out how many pepperonis there are altogether. If you label each piece with a letter (A-F: pizza cut into six slices) children can roll two abc dice and then add the total correctly in order to earn a point.

Science and Social Studies Connections

Social Studies- connect the story of The Little Red Hen Makes Pizza to responsibilities within communities.

Just For Fun

Make mini pizzas using canned biscuits for the crust. Top with pizza sauce and toppings and bake.

Decorating Ideas

We're Tops- create a bulletin board with pizzas. Put pictures of the kids on top of "toppings" such as pepperoni cut outs.
